  • Want to avoid mashing yourself up for Christmas?

Friend of Hit the North, didgeridoo player, mountain bike skills coach and all round top bloke Ed Oxley is offering skills training gift vouchers.

    Buying a voucher will ensure:

    1) That you will become a riding God.

    2) Ed will be able to buy his kids some Christmas presents.

    3) You won’t have a part of the HtN course named after you as a result of some sort of hideous pile up.

So, if you want to keep a loved one out of A&E this Christmas or if you fancy brushing up on your skills have a click on the picture for more information.

Ed will be at the race offering advice, abuse, tuneful blasts on the didgeridoo and the occasional slap on the ass if he thinks you need it. We’ll park him at the “Rooley’s Chin” memorial drop off.

  • Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls – Thermal Protection Northern Style

Those nice people from Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls have very kindly donated some to help protect competitors, marshals and spectators from the Manchester winter weather. Good work fellas!

We will be handing them out as riders cross the line (thermal blankets are for softies).

Give 'em to your Granny and watch the bugger go!

  • Not out on your bike, then why not make a cake?

Brakes shot on your CX bike? Stuck in with the kids? Weather pish? Shoes still wet after the last ride? Can’t be arsed?

Then why not bake some flapjack?

Makes about 10 slices or 2 great big ones.

    4 oz unsalted butter
    2 oz brown sugar
    2 oz syrup
    7 oz roll oats

Pre heat the oven to 190°C
Melt the butter in a pan.
    Add the syrup and sugar.
    Stir in the oats.

Place mixture in a greased cake tin and bake for 15 minutes.

Eat with a mug of fresh coffee whilst fixing the brakes on your CX.
Send your cake recipies to info@hitthenorth.net

The best one gets a free entry to the race in February.

  • Right then…

Warren has given the site a facelift so I suppose that we had better add some content.

After deciding that we were just going to trot out the same track as the last one, but with a couple of variations, we went out on Saturday and completely redesigned it. The venue is the same, but the course is about 80% different.

    Gone are the…
    Compulsory dismount.
    Muddy decking.
    Road crossing.
    Tarmac section.
    Descent past the pond.

    In are…
    2 x Evil carry/push climbs.
    Long and fast woodland downhill.
Technical downhill used in HtN 1.
    Flat out fast hardpack section.
New single track bits recently cleared by the council.

    Staying are…
    The steps.
    The start/finish field.
    The long climb.
    “Rooley’s Chin” descent.

The new layout flows much better than the old one with much more gradient. It should hold up better in the wet.

    Lap length about 3 miles.

    Race length 2 hours.

Entry fee £12. Online and postal entry soon.

    Number of riders 200.

There will be food and hot drinks available and we are working on some musical entertainment.

We will preview ride it in a couple of weeks to see how it copes with a bunch of riders. Details on here when we get round to it.

  • results and photos

Well done to all who took part and a big thanks to all those who helped us out - both on the day and beforehand.

Results are now tickety-boo and can be found here:  How did you do?

Lots of photographers braved the cold so here’s a few sets that I’m aware of. If you’ve got some shots that you want to add to this list, drop us an email.
